How Much Does Health Insurance Cost in New Jersey? (2026 Real Numbers)

The honest answer is: it depends on one question nobody asks you up front — do you qualify for a subsidy? In New Jersey, that single fact decides whether you're paying $200 a month or $1,200 a month for similar coverage.

Marketplace (Get Covered New Jersey) prices in New Jersey

If your household income is roughly between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, Get Covered New Jersey applies a premium tax credit and your net cost can be a few hundred dollars a month or less. Above that line — and the enhanced subsidies that briefly extended help above 400% expired after 2025 — you pay the full sticker price. For a healthy 40-year-old in Newark, full-price Silver plans from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, AmeriHealth New Jersey, and Aetna CVS Health commonly run $550–$850 a month in 2026; a family of four is often $1,500–$2,500.

Private plan prices in New Jersey

Private shared-network plans are priced on age and health instead of income. For a healthy individual in New Jersey, PPO plans on the MagnaCare and Cigna PPO networks typically run $290–$460 a month at age 30, $360–$520 at 45, and $430–$600 at 60. Families land roughly $800–$1,300. Those numbers assume you pass a short health questionnaire — these plans aren't guaranteed-issue.

What moves the number

Age (marketplace plans can charge a 64-year-old three times what a 21-year-old pays; private plans are banded by age too), tobacco use, whether you're covering a spouse or children, the deductible you choose, and — for marketplace plans only — your income. New Jersey has a progressive state income tax, so a self-employed health premium deduction is worth more here than in a no-tax state.

The New Jersey-specific wrinkle

New Jersey does not allow short-term medical plans, so the private alternatives here are the shared-network PPO plans rather than short-term coverage.

So what should you expect to pay?

If you qualify for a subsidy: use it, and compare Get Covered New Jersey plans. If you don't and you're healthy: you should expect to pay less than full marketplace price, usually meaningfully less, on a private PPO. If you don't qualify and you have a serious pre-existing condition: the marketplace is still your best option, and a licensed agent should tell you that rather than sell you something that won't cover you.
