Two markets for the self-employed

Subsidy-eligible after business expenses → Get Covered New Jersey. Above the subsidy line and healthy → private PPO on MagnaCare and Cigna PPO, priced on your health rather than your income. Serious condition → marketplace regardless.

The deduction

New Jersey has a progressive state income tax, so a self-employed health premium deduction is worth more here than in a no-tax state. Self-employed people deduct 100% of premiums above the line on either kind of plan, and can stack HSA contributions on an HSA-eligible plan.

Who we see most in New Jersey

Realtors, contractors, consultants, drivers, salon owners, and anyone running a business from Newark, Jersey City, Edison and across the state. New Jersey does not allow short-term medical plans, so the private alternatives here are the shared-network PPO plans rather than short-term coverage.
